people…
In Uncategorized on March 1, 2010 at 10:25 amWhile a daunting expanse of history is recovered each day, we are now fairly certain that people have always been people. People in power, people in love, the do-gooders, the losers, the wife-beaters, the mad, bad and dangerous, all have a place in the historical epic. What we are not certain about is why they did the things they did, or why they continue to do the things they stubbornly do.
With the growing obsession of applying corresponding psychology to each action, we have now discovered a protective counter strategy: to justify each action in such a way as to make us completely inculpable of any crime.
How nice.
Why did you do that? Why did you let that weed grow? ’Oh, my parents neglected me as a child, I had a traumatic time growing up’/ ‘I didn’t have the heart to pull it out’ etc. Stop it. Why can’t we just say ‘It just happened’. And stop this need of self-validating ourselves.
While I am presented with the challenging task of understanding the elusive complexity of the human psyche everyday (What to do when your husband’s a jealous maniac/ my son is in love with a boy claiming to be a girl on the internet/rajeena won’t eat infront of people but would stuff her face whenever she gets the chance/surprisingly agile and energetic grandmother has alzeihmers and is driving me nuts etc) I still can’t understand how no advice can benefit two people alike. Also, how exhausting it is to try and really sympathize.
Refreshingly, young adults have abandoned the habit of cleaning after themselves. They’d tell you just about anything without exercising any self-censorship. This includes ugliness in way of uncontrollable rage, paranoia, the incessant need to gossip, inappropriate feelings of lust, greed and hate for people etc. Why are they so willing to bare all and why are we so shrouded in hypocrisy? Also, which is better?
Is it because of a general degradation in our value system, where bad is just as good as good? Or just that casting off of the suffocating mask. A hamlet moment here: God gives you one face, and you make yourselves another!! bitches! well, Hamlet didnt say that, but he wanted to I’m sure.
Women swear by the practice of not telling anything about their predictable pasts to the unsuspecting morons who still think that these women came out of a cocoon just seconds before they met them. These morons (and I use the term for both the men and women in this case) are usually all set to marry (merry). So now the conundrum is climaxing! We want to believe that lies will bring us security and protection, whereas truth will only mean instability.
In a world where everyone is lieing, could you pull off telling the truth?
